AUCKLAND, April 25. At tho Tariff cmmissicn Messrs Alfred Kidd, J. G. Citrr, and J. McLeod, representing the Frien iiy Societies' Conference, asked that tbe Friendly Societies Act be amended so as to relieve tho Societies from stamp duty oa drafts cr orders, and that they snould be relieved from srump duty on cheques. They aiso asked that no duly be placed on imported medals used by Friendly Societies. Mr John Earl suggested that iusiead of the present du'y oi so much per pound on tea an ad valorem uuly shcuid be fixed, and that tea vendors be iican cd. Mr E. Dutton asked that the duty on cork be raised to 20 or 25 per cent., and that bung- should be brought in under the 3*me heading. Messrs Jas Thomas Henry and Robt. hummer asked for an increase of 10 per ceut on washing powder. Mr Austin. Walsh asked that raw tobacco leaf be reduced from 2s to Is 6i, aa Jormerly, with an alternative that the treble duty be i educed 6d on tobacco manufactured in the colony, and that this arrangement should •-■xteud over a period of five years. Mr Moses Exler asked tha: the duty on earthenware jars and glass jars be raised from 20 and 15 pet cent, to 25 per cent, all round.
