No Dredging was done during the years I£SS, 1889 and 1893.—Total quantity dredged from the commencement in May, 1876, to 23th December, 1804, 15,807 barge loads, equal to 4,151,845 tons. The dredging operations were discontinued on the 51st January, 1886, and the Dredge end Barges were laid up. On the Ist May, 1887, the Dredge and Barges were again put into commission, and the work was continued for five months, ending on the 30lh September, 1887, when the plant was again laid up. Ou the Bth June, 1890, dredging operations were re-com-menced and continued till the 20th October, 1890, when the dredging plant was sold to the Westport Harbour Board for £12,000. On the 3rd November, 1891, the Lyttelion Harbour Board chartered the Steam Hopper Dredge, No. 222, from the Otago Harbour Board for a period of six months, dating from 3rd November, 1891, and ending 3rd May, 1892. On the 27th November, 1894, the Lyttelton Harbour Board again chartered Dredge No. 222 for a period of six months, to end on the 27th Hay, 1835. The surplus of pilotage receipts more than covers the above amount. I The tug also undertakes the work of'shifting vessels from one wharf to another, for which no tontage charge is mode when it is done for the general convenience of the shipping. New boilers were put into the tug in September, 1835, at a cost of £1545, nnd Mr Croll, the Government Inspector of machinery, now reports that very considerable renewals and repairs to the tug are necessary. The insurance premiums paid on the - tug Lvttelton during the post sixteen years amounts to £553915510 d. , . (No. 7)— Graving Dock, Lyttelton f working expenses for the twelve months ending December 31st, 1894.

Note—Giving the craving dock credit for the dock dues on the Board's tug, the actual earnings for 12 months to 31st December, 1894, would be £177 4s 3d. The net earnings for 1893 were £206 8s 5d.. 23 vessels were docked in 1883, 28 vessels were docked in 1834, 25 vessels were docked in 1885, 25 vessels were docked in 1886, 18 vessels were docked in 1887,17 vessels were docked in 18S8. 15 vessels were docked in 1889,15 vessels were docked in 1890. 17 vessels were docked in 1891,17 vessels were docked in 1898, 17 vessels were docked in 1893, 12 vessels were docked in 1894. The dockinp charges were considerably reduced in October, 1884. New by-laws were mado by the Board on the Ist August, 1883. The provisions of the latter were such as to relieve the Board of responsibility in docking vessels, and also enabled the Board' to dispense with the services of the Assistant Dock Master, at £200 α-year, and also half that of the Superintending Engineer, amounting to £125 a year. Consequently, the charge, under the head of dock salaries, at present only amounts to £150 a year. On the 15th September, 1891, the craving dock charges were further reduced, whereby vessels of 1201 tons and upwards were to be charged £50 instead of up to £75 as formerly. The graving dock and machinery cost £105,000. Interest and sinking fund on that turn at 6} por cent, amounts to £6825 per annum. ■

Hood-Williams, Secretary and Treasurer Lyttelton Harbour Board. ,15th January, 1895. Nora—2l,4Bo tons of goods were handled in the Harbour Board stores during the year ■ 1894, as against £26,546 tons for the previous year. Xote—(a) £342 7s Id of tnis amount is for storage on goods delivered during December, 1894, which could not, of course be collected at the time. (b) From this dr. balance of £164 12s 3d should be taken £80 rent of siding, which is for the three months of 1895, which has to be paid in advance. Also the greater portion of the work at the cool chamber (i.e., receiving, delivering and handling), is done by the permanent staff of the Stores Department, but is not charged against the cool chamber i These two items alone would almost exceed the amount of the dr. balance.
