THE WANGANUI RIVER.

On account of the heavy frctili running in the Wanganni river the bar is described as being in a terrible condition, there being absolutely no' Channel. The steamer Mana- ; watu is stilt on the South Spit, while the Orotic which left thispovt yesterday afternoon to asaiat in floating ■ her, has herself been stranded., broadside on, on the bar. The Huio, with a load for the Aβwanley, which is in the roadstead, and the . Stonnbird, for Wellington, are delayed by,, the state of the, bar, with very, little probability of getting out to-day. nel ha» been bad for soma time owing to poor tides, and the Stormbird in entering last trip grazed oa what are thought to have been some,stones, without apparently sustaining any damage. She will,.however, go on the patent •lip'for inspection. Tho flood in the river is subsiding. This afternoon a telegram was received to the effect that the position of the Oreti is a bad one, and that she has lost her propeller. WANGANcr, February 7. Tho Oreti, which was despatched from Wellington with gear for floating the Manawatu, now lying piled up at tho entrance of the river, also canio to grief. While tryiug to enter the port thu morning at high water she gronuded on the crest of the bar. The latest particulars to-night show that she has drifted off the bar on to the beach almost 200-yards uorth of the breakwater. So far ahe has suatainod no damage except the loss of her propeller, although she is badly knocked about. Tho Manawatu is still in the samo position.
