ANGLICAN GENERAL SYNOD.

(PRESS association telegbaji.) NELSON, February 7. The Synod resumed at 3 p.m. __ It was resolved on the motion of the Rev. G. MacMurray—"That tho following resolutions passed: by the Synod of the diocese of Auckland on October 18th, 1894, be considered by the following Select Committee : —The Bishop of Cbrisichurch, the Dean of Waiapu, Archdeacons Harper and Faucourt, Messrs Speight, Briltaiu, and the mover; that the Synod respectfully submits to the Bishops and General Synod chat great uniformity and security would be gained by—-(1) Making various forms of licenses for clergy to be drawn on one set of models for the province; {2) making it necessary that every priest or deacou coming from other dioceses and travelling through the country or 3ojourniug anywhere in the province for more than a month must have authority in writing from one Bishop of tho province in order to minister; (5) making it an in/* . struction to all Churchwardens that in case ..« of any person coming to minister in the church, and tho curate in charge be absent, it shall be their duty to satisty themselves regarding his authority to minister; (4) making the designations of the clergy the same throughout the province." There was considerable discussion'upon the motion—" That the recommendations of the Select Committee on tho petition of Archdeacon Bo.iumoiy; be adopted as follows :—(1) That tho appointment by the SiandingUomnittecof thedioceseof Dunedin ' of Dean Fitchett, Canon Lucas and the Roy. F. W. Martin, as clerical representatives, was invalid and ineffectual; (2) that the election of Canon Dold, the Keys. "W. C. Cotes and F. W. Martin, undor a writ tram the Primate, was a valid election, and that the Returning Officer be instructed to make his return to the writ accordingly ; (3) that to fill the two vacancies caused by the re* sign'ations of Canon Dodd and the Rev. VV. 0. Cotes, a fresh writ should be issued by the Primate." The Bishop of Dunedin, the. principal speaker on *ho motion, defended his personal action in the matter. On maintenance; (o and d) portions of the Maria Blackett Scholarship Fund, and all the proceeds of other scholarship funds have been expended-in the general maintenance of the College. The total cannot now be stated and no refunds have been made to these' funds; (c) at the joint request of the Governors and the Trustees. The debate on the proposed transfer of the Archdeaconries of •Taranaki and Tauranga was interrupted by the 6 p.m. adjournment. ' . - On the' Synod resuming, the Bishop Of Cbristcbnrch moved the second reading of the Bill to regulate matters connected with the office'of Deaconesses in an eloquent 'speech on the peculiar value of women in Church work. The Bishop of Dunedin seconded the motion. A discussion lasting nearly two hours ensued, the tone of which generally favoured the Bill. No distinct objection was offered, but caution was urged in order to prevent hasty legislation. Archdeacon Williams moved as an amendment—*. That the matter be referred to the Diocesan Synods for consideration, to report at the next General Synod. The Bishop of Wellington seconded the amendment; which was accepted by Bishop Julius and carried. The Bill was ordered to be printed in the proceedings. At 9.30 the Synod went into. Committee for the ' consideration of report ~ No. 1. Sessional Committee on reports of trustees. " Progress was reported at 1010. Sir John Hall's Bill to give women a vote at parish meetings was made the first order tor to-morrow evening.
