Press _*so_atton—By telegraph—Copyrlaht. * London, January 27. The English wheat market shows a general deoline of 6d. The Continental is dull, and the American is declining and weak. Oats, fine quality, average 22s 9d per 3841b; beans average 30a 6d, and peas 24s 3d. At the wool sales the biddiug is keen, foreign buyers taking the bulk. "Tenakoe" brand, New Zealand, brought 7£d. The total quantity of wool catalogued up to date is 109,000 bales, of which 97,800 bales were sold, 6000 bales going to America. Good wool is firm, but merino unsteady. The Antwerp sales open on February 12th. Tallow—Medium mutton, 22s * beef, 2ls. The manager of the Melbourne Chilling Butter Company is convinced that it will be necessary for the butter producers to unite and limit the number of distributing agencies in London in order to regulate supplies, and prevent the ruinous sacrifice caused by the smaller men underselling the market. Mr Gavin Scott, of Sydney, who is visiting Europe in connection with the development of the export of Australian timber, is satisfied with the prospeots. He says it is imperative that timber should be shipped well seasoned and free from gum veins, and that it should be sawn true, and allowance made for shrinkage on the voyage. Madrid, January 28. Spain proposes to increase the duty on wheat to half a dollar per hectolitre. • ■ Stdnkt, January 28. A" hundred and twenty live cattle were shipped to London by the Gulf of Bothnia. Mr Campbell has written to the Agricultural Department that he is hopeful of eat-ablisliing a trade in red gum for street pavement. It should be shipped in planks, not blocks.
