Yesterday was a busy day at Lyttelton. Of the Union Company's line the steamers Hauroto, Te Anan, Rotomahana, Orovraiti, and Dingadee arrived in quick succession: The 8.8. Tasmania, of the Huddart, Parker and Co.'a line, also arrived early in the morning. With the exception of the Orowaiti and Dingadee, all the steamers mentioned above sailed again in the evening. ' The schooner Clio cleared at the Customs yesterday for Timaru with a cargo of cornsacks and woolpacks, ex. Dnrisdeer. While Hacking in to her berth at No. 3 wharf yesterday morning the steamer Tasmania had a narrow escape from » bad accident. When the steamer had about reached the berth, the order "Stop" was telegraphed from the bridge to the engine6nt jost at that moment the connecting wire broke, and, the indicator pointing to ''Fall speed astern," that order was obeyed, with the result that the steamer was driven full speed for the No. 3 breastwork. Fortunately, the tide had abont half ebbed, and before the vessel coold reach the breastwork she ran into the mudbank at the foot of the wharf and was* brought op " all standing." Her rodder was fair amidships, so no harm, was done, though her stern was overhanging the breastwork. Had the accident occurred at full tide, it is more than probable that the steamer would have been considerably damaged by coming in contact with the breastwork. came off the mud without difficulty when the tide rose. • B.S. Hanroto, Captain A.. Anderson, arrived from Sydney via Wellington at an early hoar yesterday. She left the former port at 6.15 p.m- on the 18tb, bad Cape Farewell abeam at 3.30 p.m. on the 23rd; arrived Wellington at 4 a.m. on the 24th.

? Left again eight hours later, and reached j port as above, having experienced fine f weather throughout with moderate head winds for the greater part of the passage from Sydney to Wellington* followed by light winds down the coast. S.S. Tasmania left Sydney at 5.35 p.m. on the 16th; arrived at Auckland at 11 p.m. on the 20th; left again at- 4.50 p.m. on the 21st; left Napier at 4.7 p.m. on the 23rd ; left Wellington at 5.45 p.m. on the 24tli, and arrived at 7.50 a.m. on tho 25th. Experienced E. and S.E. winds and cloudy weather till rounding North Cape on tho 20th, and variable winds and fine weather along the coast.
