THE SHRttiE OF BHAKSPI2RE. Whatever else the colonial visitor may leave undone, he ought not to sail from England without visiting Stratford-oii-Avon. It is an acb of homage to our greatest poet which all students of his works must have desired to pay, and statistics show that many thousands of pilgrims do annually find their way to this famous sbrine. Last year upwards of 25,000 persona, paid for admission to Shakspere's birthplace. They were people of every tribe and every tongue, comprising no fewer than thirty-eight different nationalities, and it may be interesting to add that thirty-six persons signed " New Zealand" after their names. The 25,000 only represent a moiety of those who visit Stratford, since a very large number, especially of excursionists down from London for the day, content themselves with inspecting the outside of the building. It is probably safe to estimate that between 50,000 and 60,000 persons are drawn every year by the magic of Shakspere's name tc this little Warwickshire town.
