INCREASED USE OF MAIZE IN GERMANY.

The Agricultural Department of the United States tia« received from John Mattes, Junr., one of its representatives in Europe, a letter showing a satisfactory increase in the use of American maize in Germany. He says the prejudice formerly existing against maize as fodder for horses and cattle is daily growing less and while there has been mo progress made to induce Germans to eat maize bread, the work to »j °* fee<lers lo "tiliee it in place of other fodder substitutes has been more successful. American maize, Mr Mattes aays, is bscoin»»g more popular with feeding of horses aud Rattle. Two years ago maize was not l&voared and it had to be a great «!eal cheaper than oats If used, bat now w nude takers at the same price Iβ Oats. The scarcity ol forage plants "«t year ia Germany compelled feedeis }* n «e maize, and since they have diseovt **<l its nonriahing and strengthening }v*3 ties, the report says, it i* safe to assert ««*t the consumption will increase annually. "OTnany cannot produce sufficient fodder for the live stock, and large quantities of »t» are imported annually, but maiza is 40w preferred by many. In 1880 Germany waported 551,932 tons of maize; in 1891. W8.326 tons, and ia 1893 761.079 tons, M»*e figures being in each case three times lOe amount of oats imported. Mr Mattes accompanied his report with a table showing that the street car companies in all the •Tμ cities feed maize to their horses with olfactory result*. The total consumption *jUaxways depend, he says, upon the local production of forage plants, but it is certain WM maize is rapidly taking the place of owed brewers' grain, oilcake, and many «ocr inferior substitutes.
