Auckland, October J5. In view of the opening of the cricket season the first practice matches took place on Saturday, when the weather was perfect and the ground in capital order, thanks to the care bestowed on it during the winter months by MrR. J. Yates.the veteran cricketer. The members of the Club showed some good batting. B. Wright, a recent arrival from Melbourne, exhibited excellent form. Nicholson and che two ex-ChrUtchurch players Owen and T. Wilson, were al«o in good form with the bat. With such bats as I. Mill*, Wright, Nicholson and Lawsou in the ranks Parneli should stand an excellent chance of winning che senior championship. W. Hawkins, the well known United player, has thrown in his lot with Purneli this season.
The Gordon Club continued their club match commenced on the previous Saturday, last year's first eleven defeating the rest of the club by 23 runs on the first innings. The first of the contests for the Warehousemen's Challenge Cup took place between teams representing Messrs A. Clark and Son*, and Messrs Sargood, Son and Ewen and resulted in a win for the former by 22 runs. The only player who reached double figures for the victors was the Parnell crack, I. Mills, who went throuech the innings for 53 runs, the rest of the team scoring only 27. For Sargood's the play of Burzess and Austin proved most serviceable, both in battiug and bowling. The entries for the present season for the Auckland Cricket Association Championship in the three grades were received on Saturday evening.?* For the Senior Championship there were, four entries, Junior eipht and Second Junior eleven. The first matches of the season will be played on Saturday next.
