The schooner Trio, with five hands, and the ketch Kob Boy, with four hands, are missing, and it is feared tbat tbey have foundered. THE NEW SOUTH WALES FOOTBALL TEAM. The football team speak in high terms of the treatment they received in New Zealand. MRS BESANT. Mrs Besant has sailed for Auckland. ! ACTION AGAINST A UNIVERSITY. Melbourne, October 2. Professor Lyle has brought an action agaiust the University, claiming the performance of specific contract, or £20,000 damages. The action is the outcome of a dispute as to whether the University, under the terms of its agreement, has power to retreuch a professor's salary. VICTORIAN RAILWAY POLICY. Melbourne, October 2. Mr Williams, Miuister for Railways, replying to a deputation, gave Borne idea of the railway policy of the new Government. He said it was proposed to proceed with railway construction where good traffic was likely to be secured and promising country developed. The lines should be light ones. They would encourage cheap excur sions conducted by the Government instead of outside agencies, and it was also probable that the notices of dismissal in the construction branch givea by the late Government would be withdrawn. ALLEGED LARCENY OF DEBENTURES. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Burford, an officer of the Bank of New South Wales, for the larceny of £700 worth of debentures. The theft was only discovered through his ob taining leave of absence on the ground of ill health, in August. It is supposed that Burford has gone to San Francisco and sold the debentures before his departuie. "CONSULTATIONS." Brisbane*, October 2. The Government have revoked the interdict against the delivery of letters to sweep promoters. A PURCHASE OF LAND BILL. A- Bill has been introduced giving the Government power to purchase agricultural land, especially in tbe Darling Downs district. Mr Powers opposed the measure on the ground that it would enopurage the Government to go in tor laud speculations. The Premier said the Bill was introduced in deference to public opinion. Mr Glassey opposed it, claiming that the public bad made no demand for the purchase of land in the Darliug Downs district. The debate is proceeding. IMPERIAL PENNY POST. Adblaidb, October 2. Mr Henniker Heaton has arrived here. He will approach tbe several Governments and Chambers of Com merce respecting tbe Imperial peuny post. '
