Referred to the Estates Committee to report upon. The Finance Committee reported the receipts since last meeting to be £268 2s 7d, and advised payments amounting to £190 4s lOd. Adopted. The Engineer-in-Charge of the pumping station reported on the machinery and the work done. Certain needed repairs were authorised to be effected. The Foreman of. Works reported on the work done during the fortnight, and some trifling works were ordered to be put in hand. Cr. Schumacher, in accordance with notice given, moved— " That the resolution passed on September 4th, 1894, re the repairs to the British Hotel be rescinded." Cr. Webb warned Cr. Schumacher that he was doing, an unwise thing in moving for the resolution to be rescinded. The Council had acted very f onerously towards Mr McGavin in voting !50 to assist him in putting the place in repair. In the present temper of the Council it was quite possible that if the resolution were rescinded and the Council were again approached they would probably refuse to grant any thing. He would certainly oppose the motion now before the meeting, but would not say how he would vote on any fresh proposal for assistance. Cr. Radcliffe thought Mr McGavin had been taken at a disadvantage in taking over the place when in such a dilapidated condition. He would be in favour of granting say another £16 to repair, the place. Cr. Cook said the transactions were carried out before he came into the Council. It appeared t* him the arrangements meant that the Council sbould let the place in good repair, and the tenant keep it so. The Mayor said there was no misunderstanding between the parties. The lease had been drawn up, and was perfectly well understood by both parties. The motion waa lost by four to three, Crs. Stinson and Laureason having left the meeting.
