On September Ist he experienced a heavy gale, which increased iv fury. For three days the vessel was hove to, and her rudder carried away m the rudder case. This was 500 miles from Wellington. He rigged a temporary rudder with hawsers, bub this was of little avail, and, as the wind was fair, the schooner sailed on by herself.
