LINWOOD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the above Council to consider the accounts was adjourned, owing to the balance sheet not having been returned from the Auditor-Gonerul. Too Councillors present were —The Mayor (in the chair), Crs. Pentecost, Jos. Taylor, Marshall, Horsley, Duncan. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. Board, Wilson, and Jno. Taylor. The ordinary meeting was then held. The Mayok reported the result of tho public meeting hold to consider tho loan proposals. Crs. Board and Taylor who wore abeent wroce in favour of the mailer going to Che poll. The Mayor gave it as his opinion that tho interest in tho loan w»s so far from beiug unanimous that it would meet rejection were it takeu *.o tho poll. He suggested that ie should not be further proceeded with.
Cr. Pextkcost concurred in that view. Though he was personally in favour of a poll, ho felt it would not be accompanied with success.
(Jr. Marshall reported similar opinions as expressed by ratepayers. Cγ. Horslf.y held the view that the matter should go to the poll, yet he was doubtful of success if it were necessary to get uearly 600 ratepayers to vote for it.
Cγ. Do'cax was opposed to borrowing any money.
Or. Taylor stated that many ratepayers were expecting the proposal to go to the poll. It was resolved that the question of the loan proposals be abandoned until such time as the ratepayers approached the Council to further consider it.
Mr A. 8. Bruce wrote, asking the Council to prevent any but propcly licenced hawkers hawking goods about the district.
It was decided to reply that the by-laws which were under consideration provided for such Licenses.
The Rev. J. S. Baker wrote, and drew attention to the bad condition of the north side channel, Gloucester street.
The Clerk stated that the complaintvhad been attended to.
The Charitable Aid Board wrote that the Borough's amouut of contribution for the year was £112 Oa od.
The letter was received
The Finance Committee recommended payment accounts amounting to £138 la The receipts siuoe the last meeting were £b2 11s 3d, and the debit balance was £250 lie 2d. The sum of £6 17s had been received towards the unemployed relief fund.
The report was adopted. The Works Committee reported that a contract had been let to Harris and Co. for grubbing tho trees on the site of the new footpath on Stanmcre road, and that the formation oi the footpath had been commenced.
