THE WOOD PIGEON QUESTION.
A special meeting of the Northern Agri* cultural Association was held at Rangiora on Tuesday, to consider a proposal that the Minister of Agriculture bo informed that the-Society protests against the introduction of the wood pigeon, and that he bs asked to adopt legal measures for their destruction if they are introduced by the Acclimatisation Society. Mr W. Pearson, President, occa. pied the chair. It was explained that th* Canterbury Acclimatisation Society had abandoned the intention of importing tht wood pigeon; and Mr H. F. Gray moved, Mr E. Wilder seconded—"That this Agricultural Society heartily approves of the determination of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society not to proceed with the importation of the English wood pigeon, and that this resolution be sent to the Secretary of that Society." The motion was carried. A vote of thanks to tht Chairman was then passed.
(PBESS ASSOCIATION T——ORAM. J INVERCARGILL, May 22. A deputation from the Southland Acclimatisation Society waited on the Colonial Treasurer to protest against the proposal to import the English wood pigeon, which is particularly mischievous in Ite habits, and particularly destructive to turnips, peas, beans and grain crops. The evils resulting from the introduction of the rabbit, the sparrow, and other birds to a sparsely settled country, where the population is too small to keep them in check, was enlarged upon, and it was suggested that future acclimatisation experiments should be under direct Government control; no individual or society to have power to import animals or birds that might become nuisances to the community. .Mr Ward recognised tbe importance of the matter, and said he would at once bring it under the notice of the Minister in—rested.
