NORTH CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.

An ordinary meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Education was held yesterday morning. The Chairman stated that so far the Committee appointed tor the object of considering teachers' salaries had met twice, but so far had come to no decision. The election of three gentlemen to fill the vacancies on the Board resulted as follows :— ThomasH. Anson ... ... 119 Hon. Wm. Montgomery ... 107 Joseph Munninga ... ... 72 The Appointments Committee reported having made the following appointments :— Mr J. W. McGregor, who had been selected by the School Committee from among the approved applicants, was recommended for appointment as master at West Lyttelton. The resignations of Mr Laing, of St. Albans; Miss Prosscr, of Balcairn; and Miss F. Dawber, of Akaroa, were received and accepted. On the application of Miss Prosaer it was agreed to give her a testimonial. The following appointments as pupil teachers were recommended :—Woodend, Emily Parkin ; Fendalton, Lilian Rose Rawson, Helen Hepburn; Kaiapoi, Frederick Matthews, Aunie Lynskey; Hampstead, Alice Gertrude Orr (on receipt of medical certificate) ; Alford Forest, Bertie Gillman; Lakeside, Elizabeth Noble, as of the second year (on receipt of certificate of health). The question of appointing a pupil teacher at Kimberley was deferred till receipt of the next quarterly return. A letter was received from Mr Brooker, of Medbury, with reference to the letter from the Board of the 6th February. It was resolved that the condition then prescribed by the Board must be observed. Letters were received from the master at Woodside and an ex-pupil teacher, asking to he paid the amounts that would have been received had the pupil teacher passed for the third year in 1892, on the ground that at the end of 1893 he succeeded in passing for the fourth year. It was resolved that the request could not be complied with. Applications for appointment as Infant Mistress and as Assistant Mistress at Christchurch West, as Assistant Master at St. Albans, as Mistress at Cust and at Balcairn, and as Master or Mistress at Wakanui Side were received and considered. The following appointments were recommended :—Woodside, Miss E. Mounsey, Mi3tress ; Cust, Miss M. Gardner, Mistress; Loburn, Louisa Brady, Pupil Teacher; Greenstreet, Miss Hunt, Sewing Mistress. In accordance with an application from the Woolston School Committee it was agreed to recommend that Mr W. Kennedy be promoted to the "position hitherto held by Mr McGregor, and that the Board advertise for an assistant master in the place of Mr Kennedy. An extension of leave of absence for two months was allowed to Miss Orr, of Ashburton, without salary. The resignation of Frederick Smith, pupil teacher, on the ground of ill health, was received and accepted. The Committee recommended the appointments, at West Christchurch, of Miss May Grant as infant mistress, Miss M. Morrison as assistant mistress, Miss McGregor acting infant mistress, Miss Lena Smith temporary assistant mistress. The Buildings Committee reported having met, when the following business had been transacted:—A letter was received from the Department, stating that the instalment promised on the Ist June was promised with reference to the Board's letter of May 20th, which contained nothing to suggest that the Board was likely to postpone the claims of Waltham. It was resolved to reply that the Board exercised its discretion in doing the most {necessary work. The Clerk of Works had been instructed to report on the condition of the roof of the Balcairn school. Another closet was granted to the Methven school. In reply to an application from the Belfast Committee, to have the guttering repaired, it was resolved that the matter should be a charge on the incidental fund. The Clerk of Works had been instructed to make some necessary repairs to the Amberley school. An application from the Addingtou School Committee for £413s for extra expenses incurred in levelling was not granted. The sum of £5 was granted to the Heathcote Valley, school for improving the inside of the master's house. It was also resolved to pay. half the cost of a new tank. In regard to an application for an addition to the master's house at East Oxford, tbe matter was left for the Clerk of. Works to report on. It was pointed out that the Burwood school had been painted only two years ago, and it was not thought necessary to provide a new fireplace at the master's house. The sum of * £5 was voted to the Belfast School Committee for levelling the playground. A letter was received from the St. Albans School Committee relating to repairs at the side school. Mr Wright reported that he had authorised two grates for the schoolroom. Mr Wright's action was approved, and the Clerk was directed to alter one of the windows in the caretaker's house, and to paper a bedroom. It was resolved to invite applications for building leases for the section into which i Reserve 777, in Ashburton, had been j divided, upon the terms and conditions I already decided on by the Board. The Board was recommended to take the necesi sary steps for the erection of a schcol at Woodstock, and for the formation of a school district. The School Committee lat Darfield was requested to attend to repairs required in regard to a leakage. The roofing of the master's house at Southbridge was authorised. Covering the roof with iron, and some other repairs at Laketide were authorised. It waa resolved that the Building Committee visit the Lyttelton and West Lyttelton schools to decide what should be done in the matter of a number of repairs asked for. On the recommendation of the Clerk of Works it was decided to request tho Glentunnel School Committee to have their water tanks cleaned out. \, Mr Wright reported that, as empowered by the Board, he..had arranged with the Bank for an overdraft. It was resolved to instruct the Clerk of Works to proceed at once with the following buildings :—New schools—Hornby, Lowcliffe, Graham's road, Porter's Pass. Additions to the schools at Methven and Southbrook, and to the houses at Hinds and Kirwee. Houses—Winchmore, Bushside, Doyleston. The Chairsian stated that, in compliance with the wish of the Board, the Secretary had procured a number of sample straps, in order that a regulation weight might be fixed on. Ie was resolved that the strap marked A in use in the Normal School be adopted as indicatiog the maximum weight, length and thickness, and minimum width of strap authorised by the Board.
