NOTES AND MEMORANDA.
Mr Aldridge, editor of the Bible Standard, lectured at the Oddfellows' chambers last evening on ''Conditional Immortality." There was a fairly large audience. The Barnes of several persons willing to assist in the work of the New Zealand Evangelistic and Publication Association were afterwards taken. The first of a season of three popular concerts will be held in the Tuam street Theatre this evening. The programme is a good one and should ensure a full house, as the names of several of our most popular Tocalists appear upon it as performers. The usual excursion to New Brighton takes place this evening, cars leaving the Square at 7.15 p.m. Mr C. E Gilby gives a free lantern lecture at the Oddfellows' Hall to-morrow evening on " Shorthand and the Typewriter." All who are in favour of a reduction of w>t more than 25 per cent, of the licensed houses in Christchurch are invited to attend a meeting at the V.M.C.A. rooms tomorrow afternoon. The Assessment Court for the City of Chriatchurch will be held on Thursday, 22nd of March. A public meeting takes place at the Pnillipstown schoolroom to-morrow night, to consider licensing matters. A pleasant meeting of the St. Michael's Temperance Society was held last evening, when the Rev. Mr Averill, the newly appointed Incumbent, opened the proceedings with an address. A good programme of instrumental items was gone through. The meeting closed v ith cheers for Mr and Mrs Averill and for the Rev. Mr Northcote, Who is leaving St. Michael's. The Richmond Amateur Swimming Club held a 75-yards handicap race in the Richmond Swimming Bath last evening. The winner of the fiuai turned up in A, E. Milne 20sec, W. H. Thomas 17sec, 2nd ; H. T. Dudley 16sec, 3rd, after a splendid race; time, 84 1-oth sec. The following have scored five points and over for Mr Eden George's trophy :— J. R. Butterfield 8, F. H. Shaw and W. Shaw 6; J. Y. Daly, J. Stapleton and A. E. Milne 5. At the meeting of the Heathcote Road Board on Monday summonses were ordered to be taken out forthwith against a large number of defaulters, to'whom repeated notices have been posted and delivered. The Juvenile Court Star of Canterbury, No. 2309, A.0.F., held its annual summoned meeting on the 27th ult. The election of officers for the ensuing term resulted as follows :—C.R., Bro. F. A. Lukey; S.C.R., Bro. A. E. Ashman; S.W., Bro. Thon. Wade; J.W., Bro. D. Appleyard; 8.8., Bro. J. Stratford; J. 8., Bro. A. E. ODaylor; Minute Secretary, Bro. H. J. Davidson; Treasurer, Bro. W. A. Weakley. (The Secretary read the annual report and balance-sheet, which showed the total membership to be forty-seven, fifteen having been initiated during the year and five transferred to the adult Court The balancesheet showed the total receipts to be £33 14s lid and the expenditure £30 ss, leaving a balance in hand of £3 9s lid, and a credit balance in the Bank of £72 2s 6d. One candidate was initiated, after which the C.R. cloned the Court. Receipts of the evening, £3 9s 9d.
