DEMAND FOR LAND IN OTAGO.
(PRESS association telegram.)
DUNEDIN, February 27.
The demand for land in the Central Otago district appears to be very keen. The Highfield Station, Maniototo County, which fronts the route of the Otago Central Railway, was cut into fourteen small grazing runs, varying from 168 to 1690 acres, the rent varying from 6d to 10£ d per acre. For these 876 applications were received. There were 163 for one run, 152 for auother, 123 for a third, and between 80 and 100 for the four others. A dispute occurred in con* nection with the ballot for one run. When the result was declared the successful applicant was neither present nor represented by an agent, and the Chief Commissioner ordered a second ballot. Subsequently the agent of the first successful applicant claimed that his client was entitled to the laud, as though not in the room he was in the Land Office.
