AUCKLAND NOTES.

February 23. Sir G. M. O'Rorke has received th* following telegram with reference to the proposed closing of the quarantine station at Motuihi from the Minister of Lands :—"The question of tho Auckland quarantine station was before the Cabinet yesterday, and in consideration of your telegram the whole matter is postponed until my return from the South. This will give an opportunity to farmers in the Auckland distriot to put their views of the case before the Government.—*Jons MoKkkkik, Wellington." The Premier has telegraphed to the Mayor of Cambridge and the Secretary o. the Club, in reply to a request that he should visit Cambridge :—" 1 shall be most happy when iv the Waikato district to meet a deputation from the Cambriuge Borough Council and the Waikato Farmers' Club at Cambridge. I leave Wellington on Wednesday week and shall probably be ten days or a fortnight before I shall reach the Waikato." The petition costs in the recent election petition amounted to over £*700, subject to reduction by taxation. lb is uot known, says the Star, what the respondent's own costs are, but if we estimate them at half the above amount, we have a penalty ot over £1000 claimed from Mr Monk, for an ofleuoe which the Judges who heard the case declared to have been committed without his knowledge, and which we are confident he would never have knowingly countenanced. There is surely something radically wrong iv a judicial system under which a state of things prevails.
