THE WAIMAKARIRI.
Yesterday the members of the South Waimakariri River Board made their annual visit of inspection to the upper' works. The members who undertook the trip were Messrs W. Boag, Chairman, B. W. England, T. Wilson, J. Glanville, H. Crooks, C. F. Money, and C. J. Atkinson, j and Mr H. Allison, Secretary. As usual the Board invited a number of citizens to accompany them, so as to ascertain for themselves the nature of the work carried ont to protect the city and the plains from the flood water* of the river, and among those who accepted the invitation.was his Worship the Mayor and Mr E. Cuthbert, Engineer of the Christchurch Drainage Board. The party were driven by Mr id. Davie in one of Hay ward's drags, and on the way up inspected several of the Board's reserves, which are becoming overran with gbrse and broom, with » view to ascertain and consider the best Bteps to be taken to, Clear them. A short stay was made at the house of the overseer, Mr Jeal, where luncheon was partaken of* the hamper as usnal being in charge of Mr H.Crooks. Amove was then made to No. 14 embankment, and after inspecting this the party walked some miles down the rivet, seeing several other protectiveTwbrks and the plantations on the way. The works are all in excellent order and appeared to have suffered little or,no injury since the ■** Jubilee" flood. The trees are growing well and have made more than the average amount of progress daring the last two years. A plantation of silver poplars made last season is coming on well, the trees thriving best in the loose sand, which retains the most moisture and enables the roots to spread freely. The day was warm but pleasant, and the outing was a very agreeable one. The party reached town shortly after seven o'clock.
