AVON ELECTION. TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS.

Sir, —I should like to remind "Antisham,'' the gentleman who wrote the letter which appeared iv your issue of to-day, that if Mr Tanner is out on the prohibition ticket pure and simple, that Mr Mclntyre and Mr Wilson also occupy that proud position according to your statement in your issue of the 21st of this month, wherein you put at the end of their names the letter P signifying Prohibitionists. Now what are the facts of the case. Myself and Mr J. T. Nott and Mr Ellison on behalf of a temperance body waited on Mr Tanner, Mr Mclntyre, . and Mr Wilson to get their views on the licensing question. Mr Tanner and Mr Wilson are in favour of the' direct vote by a bare majority without compensation. Mr Mclntyre is in favour of the direct vote, in favour of giving a majority of those actually voting the right to determine the issue or refusal of licenses, but reserves to himself the right, however, to concede up to a maximum of three-fifths of those voting els a compromise, if by so doing better legislation could be secured on other important branches. But at Woolston on the 14fch of this month Mr Mclntyre Btated from the public platform he would support tbe direct vote on a bare majority, without any reservations whatever, and was also against granting any - compensation for loss of licenses. With reference to " Anti-sham's" assertion that the temperance leaders are running Mr Tanner, our leaders so far are not running any candidate to my knowledge, but we are forced to choose our own candidate.—Yours, dfcc, Wm. F. Thomas. Woolston, November 24th, 1893.
