COURTENAY SHOW.
The Courteiißy Agricultural and Pastoral Association were favoured with splendid weather for their annual Show oa Friday. There was a good attendance, the takings at the gates—£4o— showing a slight increase on last year. This year tbe Association threw open nearly all the classes in the show, but few outside exhibitors took advantage of the privilege. There was, however, a small increase in the number of exhibits. There was liner competition in the .heep classes, and some excellent exhibits of crossbred sheep. Mr Overton shuwed some of his splendid Lincolus, and Mr J. Cough, sent forward some line fat sheep. Tho largest prizetakers in sheep were Messrs G. Seaton, H. Overton, J. Gough, R. and J. Reid, F. Bull, 'G. Addington and D. Mulholland. There was only a small entry of cattle, and little or no competition. None of the classes call for special mention. There waa a fair entry of draught horses, and one or two exceptionally good classes. Mr G. A. Mangin'a Rob Roy was placed first in the entire class over Mr R. Edgeworth's Nobleman. Mr A. Nelson's Bet was awarded first prize in a ring of excellent dry mares. Mr J. Tolerton'. two-year-old filly Geutle Annie, which took second prize at the Metropolitan Show, was awarded first and special honours In her class. ' A full brother to this filly took flr.t prize in tho yearling class. There was fair competition in the hackney classes, and some useful animals were shown. Mr T. H. Piper's President Garfleld, a compactly made little horse, by Victor, beat Mr A. G. Holmes' Kaiser iv the stallion class. The jumping waa poor, but the horses had not a fair show owing to the spectators crowding round the water jump. Pigs and poultry call for no special comment, There was a good collection of implements, cmong . them being a patent gorse cutter attached to a traction engine. The knives are connected with a shaft, which, has a universal joint, and driven direct from the driving wheel of the engine. It wasshown by Messrs F. and H. Holland, of Greendale, and It is said that the machine does Us work most satisfactorily. There was an excellent show of butter and home-made bread, and the exhibits were of first-rate quality. A competition at guessing the weight of a live sheep drew fifty-eight entries, and after the sheep were killed and weighed it was found that seven bad guessed tho correct weight, namely, 781b. The successful competitors were Messrs Hartnell, Anderson, Sowden, Jar man, Vincent, White and Thorson. The Hon. Sec, Mr George Bedford, was as usual painstaking in his efforts to make matters go smoothly. The general license booth on the ground was run by Mr Hickson, of Coalgata; Mr J. Robinson, of Cnristchur eh, had the public luncheon and refreshment booth; and Mr Balstone, ot Kirwee, catered for the Committee luncheon.
