THE CHEVIOT ESTATE.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir, —After reading a letter by " Farmer" in Tuesday's issue ou this much vexed question, I was convinced the writer had a somewhat vague idea what he was talking about. He commences wailing at the outset. The upset prices, he says, will "prevent a large number of would be buyers from going to look ab the land." What earthly reason is' there in that ? He seems to my mindto : be one of those selfish beings (rarities nowadays, thank goodness) who are not greedy but like a lot, for after admitting the place to be a Garden'pf Eden, he coir - plains that the Government (Who paid £3 per acre, surveyed and roaded this vast area) ought to.be able to sell ib for less than an average;, of £7 10s per acre. He also says he thought (a lot of people do that) the Government intended to encourage settlement. Now, he thinks differently, viz.— that they intend making a handsome profit out of it. Now, Sir, he would have your intelligent readers believe that by offering Cheviot for sale and lease in 216 farms and village settlements the Government are not encouraging settlement. Was anything ever r so abased. IJesays he is. no new chum- S say if j*a,- of brie sort he is of another. After telling us that he knows the property very well (twenty years ago) he amply proves that he is one of a mean set who would do well to bear in mind the old proverb "Never venture never win." —Yours, &c, f Artisan.
