ENTERTAINMENTS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

Last night the Dramatic Class attached to the Students of Truth gave a very successful performance of scenes from " The Rivals/ when there was a large attendance. Misa Jones made v. very good Mrs Milaprop, her " derangement of epiu»phs " being excellently done. Miss Shepperd both looked aud acted Lydia Langworth well, and Miss Pearce was successful in the part of Julia. Mr Barry made a very good Captain Absolute, and Mr McKenzie was aleo appropriately peppery and overbearing as Sir Anthony. The parts of Bob Acres, Frankland, Sir Lucius O'Trigger, and Fag were creditably filled by Messrs J. Morrison, E. F. Owen, E. Fowler, and C. Thompson. Altogether the performance, though an ambitious one, was exceedingly creditable, and the piece was excellently dressed and staged. The annual parish gathering in connection with St. Matthew's, St. Albans, will take place to-day. There will be shooting gallery, parlour games, cake and confectionery competition, musical items, and in the evening there will be a conversazione, ffhe

price of admission is the now popular six* pence. The performance of the " Kiader«piel, M which was receutly given so success* fully at Riccarton, "is to be repeated this evening, at 8 p.m., in Trinity Hall, Manchester street. The principal characters comprise " The Old Woman who Lived in a, fchoe," "Aladdin," "Miss Muffett," "Sinbad," "Marjory Daw," "Robinson Crusoe," "Friday, ,, "Dorothy Draggletail," "Bluebeard," "Cinderella andlier Sisters," " AU Baba," " Goody Two Shoes," &c.

The second German social takes place tomorrow (Friday) evening, at St. Michael's schoolroom, wiien an interesting musical programme, both vocal and instrumental, will bo gone through, varied by light refreshments. The musical part is uuder th» direction of Mr Max Hirschborg. A very successful social in connectioD with the Church of England took place in the Ashley schoolroom on Friday eveniug last. Games, dances, songs, &c, made up a pleasant eveuing's eutertaimnent. Refreshments were provided by the ladies of the congregation, and musio was supplied by Miss Gardinor on the piano, and Messrs Dβ Troy and Barwell on violins. Mr Toshach of Fernside contributed several songs. A most successful " bread and butter N dance was held iv the Town Hall, Papanui, on Tuesday evening. The hall was crowded, about seventy-five couples being present. The ladies supplied refreshments, and Mr Harry Fleming supplied excellent mnsic, his now selections being much admired. AU the arrangements reflected great credit on the Secretary, Mr P O'Bryen Hoare.

The last of the Guild at Home gatherings was held in the Kaiapoi Church of England Schoolroom on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance. During the evening games were provided, and music waa contributed on the piano by Miss (Sims, whose playing was much appreciated. Tea, coffee, and other refreshments were provided during the evening. The last meeting of the winter session of the Leeston Literary Society took place on. Tuesday night last. There was a very largo attendance present. The schoolroom was prettily decorated and every effort made by the Committee to make the night's social an enjoyable one. The Misses Ronnie and Johnston, Mrs Arthur, and the Rev. W. Grant contributed sougs, Messrs T. Gates and S. C. Owen instrumental music, Mr R. Shaw contributed a recitation. The Committee, and especiilly the energetio secretary, Mr Chas. Hogg, and the vicepresident, Mr John Anderson, are to be congratulated on the success of the Society throughout the session. The lady members of the Committee provided a plentiful supply of refreshments.

A pleasing entertainment was given ia the Ashburton Oddfellows' Hull on Tuesday evening by tho members and friends of the Ashburton Te Korero. The programme comprised the comedy " Cupid's Camp," the various characters being well sustained by Mm E. Saunders, Mrs E. G. Crisp, Mica Graham and Messrs S. Salek, W. Saundera and H. f Curtis. After an interval for refreshments, kindly provided by the ladies, eougs were contributed by Mrs Dodds, Mm W. B. Denshire, the Mieees Gates and Mr L. Broad.
