DUNEDIN NOTES.

September 26. The fine residence of Mr Dawson, M.H.R., had a narrow escape of being burned down this morning. A fire, which must have been smoulderiug some days, broke out behind one of the mantelpieces but the flames were extinguished before any damage was done. A gang of housebreakers are carrying on operations in town, two burglaries being reported to the police yesterday. The religious bodies are taking up the case of the Salvationists, and adopting resolutions against the Milton by-laws as unjust restrictions on Christian liberty. If Mr James Green persists in his candidature for Waikouaiti it is thought that Mr Scobie Mackenzie will not come forward for that seat.
