ASHBURTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

! The Ashburton Borough School Committee met on September 21st, when there were present Messrs Bean (Chairman), Braddell, McPhe'-son, Jones, Craighead, Greenslade, Meddins, Paul, and Silcock. Tlio Master's report showed that the attendance for the past month had improved. The highest daily attendance was —Boys 253, 203 ; strict average, boy 3 227, girls I£K). Correspondence was read from the Board of Education enclosing the Inspector's report on the animal examination of the school, which took place ou August 231h aud two following days. The recent epidemic of measles had caused the schools to be closed.for several weeks prior to the examination, but notwithstandiug these unfavourable circumstances upwards of 92.7 per cent, of the children presetted in standards had passed. While complimenting the teaching staff as a whole, the examiners made special mention of the good work which had been done by the Head Master, Mr J. B. Mayne, and the Infant Mistress, Mis 3 Grant, stating that the excellence of their work was second to none in the North Canterbury district. The whole tenor of the report was highly satisfactory in every particular, and the Committee passed a resolution expressing its xinbounded satisfaction at the highly favourable result of the examination, and congratulating the teachers on the success of their efforts during the year. The report drawn up by Messrs McPherson and Haul, condemning the sanitary arrangements in connection with the schools, and which had been forwarded to the Board, had had the effect of bringing down the Clerk of Works and a Committee from the Board to inspect the school buildings. The report forwarded had not only been endorsed, but the Committee from the Beard went further and expressed surprise that so unsatisfactory a state of affairs had been allowed to exist so long. The result is that extensive alterations and.improvements will be carried into effect at an early date.
