,g The Black Diamond Minstrel Troupe btlonging to the R.M. a.s. Kaikoura will give a performance in the Oddfellows' Hall, Lytteiton, this evening in aid of the funds of the West Lytteiton Church. The troupe have given two or three performances in Wellington, where they were well spoken of. The Canterbury Chess Club will play a match with a team from the Linwood Chess Club at 7 o'olock this evening, at the rooms of the former Club.

A benefit concert has been arranged, to be given under the direction of Mr H. Weir, at the Tuam street Theatre on Thursday evening next, in aid of the funds of the Christchurch Volunteer Fire Brigade. A very excellent programme has hcea arranged for the occasion, and there ought to be a full house. The price of admissiou has been fixed at the same as the popular concerts,

viz., sixpence to all parts of Uie house. The Loyal Amberley Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., held ita quarterly meeting on Friday evening last, 22nd inst., there was a lair attendance of members. After soma discussion it was resolved to postpone V«e celebration of the anniversary as Amberley is crowded with amusemente at present. Bro. Ralph Wornall was appointed delegate to the district meeting. It was decided to call for tenders for supplying kerosene for the next twelve mouths. Receipts of the j evening, £37 13s sd. ! Mr G. J. Smith, one of the candidates j for the city of Christchurcb, will address his friends and supporters in the St. Albau3 part of the electorate to-nighfc, at eight o'clock, in St. Matthew's schoolroom. Mr Eden George, is a candidate for one of the Christchurch seats, will address a meeting of ladies only, at the Tuam street Hall, at 3 p.m. to-day. A meeting of Mr George's friends and supporters will be held at the Tuam street Theatre tonight, at eight o'clock, to form a Central : Committee. ■ A meeting will be held to-morrow even- j ing, at 7.30, in the Ferry road school, for tho purpose of enrolling women electors. Messrs Douglas and Ballinger will bo in attendance. The indoor, demonstration of the Canterbury Band of Hope Union will take place at the Oddfellows' Hull to-night. The programme includes songs, dialogues, recitations, and music by Mr Corrick'a band. The annual meeting of the members of the Canterbury Commercial Travellers' As-

aociation will be held at tho rooms, Hereford street, on Saturday evening. At St. John's schoolroom, to-night, Rev. H. C. M. Watson will givo a lecture with musical illustrations on v The Idylls of the King: an allegory of human life." At tho Lyceum, to-night, there will be a tea and social gathering in celebration of the birthday of tho late Charles Bradlaugh. The dance to close the social season in connection with the Canterbury Culedouiau Society will be held at Hobba , Assembly Rooms to-night. To-morrow evening, at the Social Hall, Madras street, the Dramatic Club in connection with the Students of Truth will givo the well-known comedy "The Rivals." The piece has been very strongly cast, i specially good scenery has been piiimcd und • the dresses are really well worth seeing. Judging by the ad mi ruble manner in which i "Tho Bohemian Girl " was given recently, j the comedy to-morrow uight ought to be : well played.
