NEWS OF THE DAY.
Supreme Court.—His Honour Mr Justice Deunistun will hold a sitting in Chambers and in Bankruptcy to-day. The Chamber sittings will take place at 10.39 a.m. Letters of Naturalisation.—Mr M. Shaskey, farmer, Papauui ; Air A. Rhoder, farmer, Marshlands ; and Mr H. Sterver, Lyttelton, have been granted letters of naturalisation. The CiiRiSTCauRCd Skat.—ln a letter to the Sydenham Borough Couucil, Mr R. M. Taylor states that he intends to stand for a seat in Parliament at the coming election against all nominees, whatever may be their " colour."
Shop Hours; Bill.—A private telegram from a reliable source has been received in Christchurcu, to the effect that on the final division nine members did not pair. Of these eight were known to be against the Bill. Had they voted the majority would have been reduced to 3. Of this majority three or four had promised to oppose the Bill, but the Government; whip was applied successfully. The Bill thus was really carried by a minority in the House. The House is thoroughly demoralised. Sydenham Borough Council. — This
Council mot last evening, and transacted a quantity of routine business, amongst which was the election of the various Committees for the ensuing year. St. Albans Borough Council.—The usual monthly meeling of the St. Albans Borough Council was held last evening. A considerable amount of business was transacted, a report of which appears elsewhere. The Hospital.—Yesterday evening Mr Rossitor's string band gave an entertainment at the Hospital. The programme of musical selections, which has already appeared, was successfully carried through, and the performance was much appreciated by ths inmates.
* R.M. Court, Lytteltox. —At this Court,
yesterday, a woman who had not been
before the Court for over twelve months was fined ss, with the usual alternative, for drunkenness. Mr A J. T. Brioe was the presiding J. P.
Alleged Pig Stealing.—At the Aehbnrton Police Court yesterday, before Mr J. W. Sawle, J. P.., Thomas Buchanan was brought up charged with having stolen two pigs, value £3, the property of Filo Evenden of Kennedy's Bush, near Chriatchurch, on September 15th. Accused, who had been arrested at Tinwald, was remanded till this morning.
Congratulatory.—At the conclusion of lasc night's meeting of the St. Albans Borough Council his Worship the Mayor (Mr H. O. D. Mearea) invited the members of the Council and representatives of tho Press to wish success to tho newly-elected Councillors. His Worship, in a brief speech, proposed the health of the new Councillors, to which Messrs Jas. Penteney, C. F. Money and James Millton responded.
The Mayoress "At Home."—Yesterday Mrs George was "at home" at the City Council Chambers, and received calls from the numerous guests attending the recent festivities. The reception took place in the Mayor's room, and was very largely attended by ladies and gentlemen notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather.
Presentation. —On Saturday afternoon Miss Willcox, who is shortly to be married, was presented with a very hindsomo present subscribed for by a few of her fellow employees at the Kaiapoi Factory. Mr Banks in a few appropriate remarks made the presentation. Miss Willcox briefly replied, aud the proceedings terminated with the usual expressions of good wishes by those present for the recipient's future happiness. An Impudent Theft.—During the progress of the fire at Mrs Murrell'a on Sunday morning, and while all hands were lending aid to remove furniture, &c, a thief abstracted a valuable gold brooch from Miss Murrell's dressing case. The thief, after taking the article, carefully locked the case again and placed it on a sofa with other things. Ib was noticeable that several Melbourne thieves were present at the fire, including a man.recently before the Court for^spioling. Native LiAnd Court.—As usual on such occasions there was a large gathering of Maoris at the Native Land Court, which opened at Kaiapoi on Monday and is expected to continue about a weak. The Native Assessor, sitting with Mr H. W. Bishop as Judge, has taken an objection to English solicitors appearing because he finds it difficult to follow cross-examinations and arguments, bub it is understood that the objection will not be persevered in provided counsel are attended by Native interpreters. The hospitality of the local Natives, ib ie said, is being rather heavily taxed to accommodate visitors, who have arrived to attend the Court.
Women's B'ranchise. —At a public meeting, in the Tuara street Hail lust night, a motion of thanksgiving was passed for tbe granting of the women's franchise, and votes of thanks were accorded to thos? members of Parliament and others who had assisted in establishing woman's " right to vote." During the afternoon and evening 600 names were enrolled, and after the meeting about another 50 were added. It was announced that the Mayor would address a meeting of women only this afternoon on " The Franchise," and that on the authority of Sir Robert Stout it was not likely that more than a week would be allowed during which time names could be enrolled.
Chbistchukch Celebrities.—Mr F. R. Rayner, who is wellknown in Christchurch as a lightning sketcher of considerable ability, has published a little sketch book containing caricatured of Christchurch celebrities with comic biographies. The various ''subjects" of Mr Rayner's facile pencil have been hit off remarkably well, and one cannot be mistaken in the identity ot any of the thirty. The price, sixpence, is remarkably cheap for so amusing a collection of the counterfeit presentiments of our notables.
Obituar*.—-On Saturday Mr D. Craig, manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company, received a telegram informing him of the death at Auckland of Mr George Burgoyne Owen, one of the • Company's Directors. The late Mr Owen was prominently connected with financial institutions in the earlier days of the colony, and for many years carried on with hie partner the well-known wholesale soft goods warehouse of Owes and Graham, Auckland. Latterly he had been in bad health, and quite recently two strokes of paralysis in succession prevented any hope of hie recovery being held out. Deceased, who was nearly seventy years of age at the time of his death, leaves a son, Llewellyn, who is employed by the Christchurch branch of the Company, in Hereford street. The flag on the Company's premises was flying at half-mast to-day out of respect co the late Mr Owen, who, as a Director and otherwise was very popular.
