THE BISHOP OF CHRISTCHURCH AT ASHBURTON.

The Bishop paid a visit to Aahburton on Friday evening, and was present at a meeting held in St. Stephen's schoolroom in connection with the Home Mission fnnd. A most cordial welcome was extended t>o the I Bishop, the Rev, T. A. Hamilton, who presided, Mr Twenty man and Mr John Curtis, on behalf of the parishioners, expjvjssing i the pleasure which was felt by all at Bishop I Julias and Mrs Julius' return to the colony. The Rev. Mr Tcakle, the organising Secretary, gave an address on the work ok the Home Mission, and made a strong appeal for help towards its funds, and asked for a number of volunteer collectors. The Bishop gave a , short* address, touching slightly on his trip home, the work of the Church in England, «*a& ! making an earnest appeal to the pariabionera of Sfc Stephen's to put all theeffortathey oottW on behalf of the Home Mission fund of iii* dioceee. Th» Chairman also spofce of the great* need of augmenting the funds in aid of Home Missions. ' .• , His Lordship then, on behalf of the parishioners, presented Mr and Mrs John Curtis, who are leaving for Christuhurcb, with a very handsome black marble clock. Mr Twentyman, sen., as one of the oldest vestrymen, paid a very high tribute to Mr and Mrs Curtis for the excellent eervicea both had rendered the Church. Ho said that Mr Curtis had been churchwarden for over five years, and had worked with remarkable zeal and good effect, earning tho esteem of all, while Mre Curtis had also rendered valuable service, and was held in the very highest regard. The Biehpp also spoke of the recipients' many excellent qualities, and in making the presentation expressed the pleasure he felt in handing to Mr aod Mr« Curtis a memento of the parishioners , deep regard and appreciation of their many services. Mr Curtis feelingly replied, and expressed regret at leaving a> pariah in which ho had made 10 many warm fend true fritadi.
