THE NEW BUILDING AND

ADDITIONS.

The teuder for the erection of the additions to the Art Gallery has been accepted. The work will at once be proceeded with. The front elevation of the new building to Durham street is in the French Gothic style. The doorway in the centre is 6ft wide, with a segmental arch, on each side are two double light pointed arch windows, the arches beiug composed of white stone and scoria in alternate stones. The columns are of Oamaru stone, with carved capping, and on each side of the window there are panels with ornamental carving. The cornice is a block one, with several of the members ornamented, and it is surmounted by a balustrade with quatrefoil ornamentation, broken up at intervals by four dies surmounted with pinnacles. " Over the doorway is a gable with a circular panel in floral design, surmouuted by a handsome carved finial. The entrance lebby is 16 x 11, having a room 14 x 11 on each side for ladies and gentlemen's cloak-rooms. Entrance is gained from the lobby to the permanent gallery by handsome swing doors filled with plate glass. The permanent gallery will be 51 x 46, the floor being laid with springs specially for dancing. Entrance is gained to the present exhibition gallery by a door 6ft wide. This gallery, with the addition now proposed, will be 82 x 42. Ou the east side, leading out of the permanent gallery, is the water-colour rooaa, 25 x 20. The serving-room, il-x7,aad refreshment-room, 25 x 11, will remain as at pre3eat. The permanent gallery will have an iron roof with laatera lights running the whole length of the gallery, giving ample light. The ventilation arrangement* are also very perfect. The water-colour room, which will also be used as a library, is lit with a top light. The architects are Messrs Collins and Harinan, and the contractors Messrs Boweu and Palmer, the contract price beine £1439. &
