FIRE ON THE SOUTH BELT.
SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES.
Between two and three o'clock on Sunday morning a fire waa discovered in an ' empty four-roomed cottage, the property of Mr A. J. White, on the South belt, opposite the Catholic boys' ecbooL The fire yam di* covered by Mr R. Wark, traveller for Mesere P. Haymanand Co., and ha. at once aroused the inmate* of Mrs Morrcll'e house, which was adjoining the one on fire. An alarm woe given to the Fire Brigades, and they were enabled to save Mrs Morrell's house, which h&d taken fire, bub Mr Whito'a house was totally destroyed. This house had been empty for some time, and was used sometimes as a " doseiag" place by tramps. Mrs Morroll states that about fifteen minutes before the alarm of firo was given by Mr Waric she heard light footsteps near the side of her house, and afterwards heard some one moving about in the empty house. She got up and looked out of her window, and subsequently aaw a well dressed maa leave the premises and go westward along, the belt. The insurance on Mr White's house could not be iscertained last evening- Mrs Morrell's house was insured for £'M>, but she h*d forgotten in what office.
