ENTERTAINMENTS AND
SOCIAL GATHERINGS. m* A most successful ball took place in the Hornby Assembly rooms on Wednesday evening, about 150 persons bein;- present. The rooms were beautifully decorated, the music was supplied by Messrs Doherty Bros., aad the refreshments by Mr L. J. Smith. A well filled drag brought out Christchurch visitors. Dancing was kept up until an early hour.
A concert was given at Rakaia on Tuesday eveniug iv aid of the Sunday School building fund. Some enjoyable musical items were given, in addition to tableaux vivants aud a farce, " Poor Piilicoddy." The singing of Mr. W. A. Day, of Christchurch, was much appreciated, and the tableaux were successfully represented by the Misses Lyttelton, Miss A. Hardy (who also sang), Miss Wreaks, and Miss Winter, and Messrs Lyttelton and Hardy, jun. The farce was well played, and kept the audience in high good humour. The characters were taken by Misses Lyttelton, Miss Wreaks, Mrs Boulnois, and Mr W. B. Dixon.
