J The monthly meeting of the Kconomtcs j Department of the Women's lastitute was I held on Tuesday afternoon at the V.M.C.A. ' rooms. The following resolutions were j passed :—l. " That, the Ecouomics Depart- j nient of the Canterbury Women's Institute j expresses its recognition of the inestimable j value of the work done by Sir John Hall on ! behalf of the women of New Zsaland." 2. j " That the mestiug accords its thanks to ■ the Government oa the passing of the ■ Electoral Bill." 3. " That the Hon. R. '■ Oliver be thanked for his championship of; theELectoral Biil in the Lsijislative Couucil.'' j The precis of a Eiil re judicial separation • was read and sanctioned by the Depart- j ment. A resolution re the Hospital Board's j proposal to the City Couucil was passed— I "That the thanks of the meeting be ac- | corded to Cr. Or»y and those Councillors who voted for his amendment." The following resolution w.is unanimously ! passed :—" That this Department recognises > the efforts and unwearying perseverance of ; Mrs K. W. Sheppard, its Superintendent, * in connection with the obtaining of the i franchise for tbe women of the colony, and j hereby accords her its sincere thanks." Xotice was given that, at the next meeting, . there should be a discussion as to the best ,' mean 3of diffusing the study of the science ot political economy among women. ] In connection with the festival of St. Matthews, St. Albans, the Bishop will preach this evening at 7.30. The usual parish gathering and sale of work will take place a week iater, of which particulars will be given later on. The Committee having the management of the Kaiapoi Gymnasium and Cadets , Bazaar, Jield a meeting on Tuesday evening, j when a inimbet ot arrangements were coaj eluded for the holding: of the fancy fair, and the Committee decided to hold weekly meetings on Tuesday evenings. j The annual meeting; of the Sydenham : Amateur Swimming Club will be held at the [ Sydenham Schoolroom on Saturday next at j 7.30 p.m. ! A notification appears elsewhere with! reference to the places at which the names j of women will be enrolled to-morrow after* | noon and evening. ! At St. Mark's Schoolroom, Opawa, tomorrow evening Messrs Hart and Seager will give their now pretty well known illustrated lecture " Old Canterbury." The > entertainment, though, exceedingly success- j fill elsewhere, has not yet been heard in ; Opawa, and, no doubt, there will be a large ; audience. i
