AUCKLAND NOTES.
September 20.
At the Tabernacle soiree last evening the Rev. J. B. Monro in the commencement of bis speech congratulated the ladies present on having at last obtained the franchise. He had been for many years a consistent advocate of the Women's Franchise. It would have the effect of raising the character of their representatives, which indeed wanted raising. The first question for the women would be as to the candidate. What wae his character ? And if he had a bad character they would not vote for him. Another result of the granting of the franchise would be that every Catholic woman would be enrolled, and her vote utilised for an assault on the national public school system, and the introduction of denominatioualism in the school system. While believing in the Bible in "schools, he did not wish to see such a state of affairs as that, and he hoped that the Protestant women would register, and give a solid vote against every attempt to undermine the education system of the colony. Judging from the large number of applications' made yesterday and to-day to the Registrar of Electors for forms of enrolment as electors, the women of Auckland are waking up to the knowledge thau they have at last obtained the franebise J A great number of printed forms were handed over to applicants at the registrar's office. Tnere are apparently about 6000 women over twenty-one years of age in Auckland city, and there are now about 8000 voters on the Auckland city electoral roll.
