THE UNEMPLOYED.
A meeting, attended by seventy or eighty men out of work, was held in Cathedral square yesterday morning. Mr Whiting addressed the meeting, and said there was a large number of men in need of work. While giving the Government credit for the Labour Bureau and co-operative works system, he considered that the Government had had time to bring in other measures which would have given more work. He was glad to see that women had got the franchise. (A Voice —" More's the pity.) He noticed that the defunct Liberal Association had chosen three candidates to run for the city, but the Liberal Association were not going to "boss the show." It was the doty of the men to return to the House Radicals from the ranks of labour if they wasted justice done. The Government were truckling to the capitalists and the employers of labour with a view to bringing down the rate of wages to a low rate. Mr Powell also gave an address, condemning the present system of charitable aid.
Messrs Whiting, Cox and Byrne were afterwards appointed a deputation to wait on the agent of the Labor Bureau, and ascertain what chance there was of work being obtained. It was stated by some of the men present that there were now as many out of work as before the late local relief work was given. A deputation representing the men oat of work, and headed by Mr Whiting, afterwards waited upon Mr Lomas, of the Labor Bureau, and requested him to wire the Premier to the. effect that there was a number of capable and willing men out of work, and asking that something be done by the Government in the matter. Mr Lomas listened to what the deputation had to say, and promised to do as they asked. He immediately afterwards forwarded a telegrwn on the subject to Wel-« liugton, and a reply was received in the afternoon from the Cbief Clerk to the effect that the Minister of Labour had been sees, and that nothing more could be done this week. The eighteen mea sent that day tc Cheviot ought to satisfy for a few days.
