LINWOOD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The newly-elected councillors for th* Borough of Linwood met last night for the first time, and were duly sworn in by the Mayor (Mr Atkinson). Present—Crs. L H. Peaticost, J. L Wilson, F. Board, T. N. Horsley, D. Duncan, J. Taylor, J. R» Brunt, and A. Marshall. Crs. Brunt and Pentecost were elected to sign the Burgess Roll. Committees were elected for the ensuing year as under : —Financial—Crs. Brunt, Marshall, and Duncan. Works and Sanitary —Crs. Horsley, Marriott, and Taylor. Lighting and By-law—Crs. Wilson, Board, and Penticost. The Mayor ex ojficio a member of each Committee.
A number of letters which had either been attended to, were unimportant, or were referred to various Committees, were read and dealt with.
The Hospital Board renewed its request for the payment of £72 8s od. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee.
The Drainage Board wrote, allowing the sewage reserve to be used on certain -bingent conditions for the deposit of nightsoil from the borongh. Referred to Sanitary Committee. A breach of the by-law by the nightsoil contractors was reported, and tbe Council resolved to inflict a fine of 5s on tbe contractors.
*"' The Drainage Board wrote, that the matter of the Tuam street drain had been referred to a Conference of members -Tom the bodies interested.
Messrs Board, Brunt and Penticost were re-appointed the Committee to pursue negotiations re the Tuam street drain, and reportMr ]V. W. Tanner wrote that be had looked through the papers at the Crown lands office and had Men unsuccessful in finding a reserve suitable for the Linwood borough. He, however, would keep the subject well to the front. A liat of applicants for work was referred to the Works Committee.
The Finance Committee reported that the receipts since the last meeting had amounted to £224 15s sd, and the expenditure, inclusive of accounts for payment, £348. The dr. b-lauce at the Bank was £32 7ssd.
The report was adopted. The Works Committee was instructed to trjr the use of hydraulic lime in channelling. On the motion of Cr. Brunt, it was decided to as- the Railway authorities to al;er the name of Wilson's road railway station to Linwood aud the Police authorities the Phiilipstown police station to Linwood, the former being on the boundary of and the latter being in the Linwood borough. Cr. Wilson gave notice to move— *'That the Council, at its next meeting, consider the propriety of borrowing a sum of money for necessary public works in the borough."
After disposing of some minor matters and passing a vote of thanks to the retiring Councillors, the Council adjourned.
