THE LICENSING BILL.
-*_ (PEESS ASSOCIATION* TELEGBAMS.) , TIMARU, September 5. At a public meeting held last night, at which sir to seven hundred were present, half being females, resolutions were adopted thanking Mr Hail-Jones, the local member, for opposing the Licensing Bill, and protesting against the Bill as retrogressive, and expressing a hope that the Legislative Council would prevent its becoming law. The speakers were the local Ministers and the Rev. Mr Macro, of Rangiora. The resolutions were carried by a shot* , of hands, not more than half votiog at auy time. The i strongest opposition was to the combination of the three-fifths majority and the halfroll poll for prohibition. DUNEDIN, September 5. At Kelso, a resulntiou was passed—" That this meetiug is strongly of opinion that the principles of the Government." Licensing Bill are agaioat; the interest* of che democracy, and : calculated to" render all eSbitiu the direction of reform futile for many years, and Parliament is hereby urged .to abandon the Bill and refer Cue question to the' people for deciekm at the general election. .
