ENTERTAINMENTS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
On Friday evening a social dance in con* nection with the Rakaia Football Club was held in the Town HalL The moric was supplied by Mr C. H. Fox, and during the evening songs were sung by Messrs Bryant, Bray, Ansley, Blunt, Chapman and Mann. Dancing and games were indulged in until four o'clock in the morning. Mr D. Brace, on behalf of the Club, thanked those present for their attendance and expressed the thanks of the Club to Messrs Hardy and Britton for their kindness in assisting them.

Songs and ; other items were given by Mrs Brocket!, I Miss Florence, Messrs Price, Davis, Allen I and Young, Sister Gilbert, Bros. Johannson, i BaU&ntyne, Irwin, W. Taylor, Simpson, j McCoU'and J. O. Taylor. During the evenj ing light refreshments -were handed round :by the members of No. 7 Ladies' L.O.L-, ■ whose assistance added to the success of the ■ gathering. A handsome orange sash wm j presented by L.O.L. No. 55 to Bro. Nash ie i recognition of the many services rendered Jto the Lodge during his term of office as : Secretary ; also a handsome present to Mra I Walk as a mark of esteem by the members. j After the concert the hall was cleared for j dancing, which was kept up until an early hour.
The V.M.C.A. Literary Society held their weekly meetiug laat night, when the evening was devoted to extempore speaking, which brought out several new speakers. The subjects discussed were—" Would granting the franchise enable women to lead a more useful life t" "Criticisms," aud "Is vegetable food the natural diet of man ?" The Secretary was instructed to write a letter of condolence expressing sympathy with Mr R. Irwin, the Treasurer, in his sad bereave' ment. The Woolston Mutual Improvement Society met on Thunday evening when a musical evening was spent. Songs were given by Misses Fellingham, Ellison (2), Messrs Frith, Spensley, Cooksley, Bot« tomley, Clarkson, instrumental duets by Miss R. and Mr H. Spensley, piano solo* by Miss Ellison and Mr D. McHaig, and a recitation by Miss M. Clarke. The Woolston Wesleyan Band of Hope held its fortnightly meeting on Friday evening. The Chair was occupied by the Rev. J. P. Nott, and a varied uud lengthy programme was rendered by the children and friends. Laat night a most successful perform* ance of scenes and music from "The Bohemian Girl," in costume, was given by the members of the Dramatic Class attached to the Students of Truth, in the Social HalL There was a very large attendance, every part of the large Hall being filled to overflowing. The opera was very prettily mounted, the dresses and scenery being capital. The latter was painted by Mr George Bradley, and was really excellent. There was a string orchestra under Mr Painter, and as the selection included all the gems of the opera, a very enjoyable time was spent by those present. Miss Fanny Martin sang the musio of Arline vrell, being very good indeed in " I dreamt that I dwelt,' and the concerted music. Mr E, Hollow sang well in the part of Thaddeus, and Mr Mason in " The heart bowed down " was loudly applauded. The other characters were well ailed, and the chorus was efficient. The children gave some calisthenic exercises well, and those having the getting up of the performance are entitled to great credit. It will be repeated to-morrow evening.
