CAPTURE OF BURGLARS.
(rmSSS ASSOOIATIOrT -KLBOBA-tS.) WELLINGTON, July 22. Two men named Potter aud Clements, both known to the police, were before the Court this morning charged with breaking into a hotel at Kaiwarawara and stealing cigars and liquor. They were remanded. July 23. The arrest of Potter and Clements, on Saturday, for burglary at the suburban hotels was a clever one. Potter and Clements first entered tho White Horse Hotel, at Ngahauranga, about 2 a.m., but being surprised got clear, having made their retreat safe by unlocking the doors to the street before making the raid. Waddington, the landlord, at once telephoned to town, and Detectives Herbert and Gautley set out for the village, which is three miles distant. At Kaiwarawara, a mile out, they met Waddiugton who had lost trace of the burglars. The trio set out for Ngahauranga, bnt noticing a light in the Rainbow Hotel, Kaiwarawara, the detectives crept up quietly to the hotel, and peeping through tho windows saw Potter aud Clements hard at work inside clearing the shelves of liquor and cigars. The burglars soon came out, and the detectives attempted an arrest, but it was no easy matter, as the accused fougbt hard, and a desperate struggle resulted. Potter vainly endeavoured to use a jemmy, and at one time Gautley was nearly choked. Eventually the handcuffs were got on the men, and they were conveyed to town. It is believed the men are concerned in several robberies in the city. Potter only recently came out of gaol after serving a sentence for _v offence of a similar nature, but so far Clements is unknown to the police.
