SEED MARKET.

Geo. G. Stead (per D. B. McLaren, manager seed department), reports :— The fine weather of the past week has given a decided impetus to the seed trade, and orders are coming forward more freely. Next month our spring sowing commences in real earnest, and as a very large area is now being prepared for laying down to grass, an active demand for all kinds of agricultural seeds may fairly be expected. Ryegrass is meeting with better enquiry, and for extra machine-dressed seed prices are well maintained.

Italian Ryegrass is scarce, certainly not more than sufficient to fill local requirements. .This being one of our earliest spring feeds, is each year becoming more fashionable.

Cocksfoot still continues in request, and very little remains in first hands. At the time of writing the market shows a decidedly bold front.

Cowgrass and red clover are not offering so freely, the bulk of the threshing being now over. Prices are firm at to-day's quotations.

Ryegrass—Choice machine seed, 3s 9d to 4s; fair average seed, 3s .to 3s 6d; Italian ryegrass, clean and true to name, 4s to 4s 3d.

Cocksfoot —Heavy dressed, 4d ;. fair to medium, 3£d to 3_d; seconds, for surface sowing, l_d per lb. White Clover—Extra bright, 95s to 100s; clean, well-graded seed, 85s to 90s.

Cowgrass, according to quality and cleanliness, ranges from 72s 6d to 80s. Alsyke, good quality, is saleable at 80s to 87s 6d,

Timothy, colonial grown, 40s to 455. Lucerne, 80s to 84s.
