ENTERTAINMENTS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
«.. — The fourth, of the series of winter amusement evenings was held at the Pioneer Bicycle Club rooms on Wednesday. There was a large attendance. "Progress and circumlocution " was the order of the «veaiug. Two tourneys were played,* one each double and single-handed, the wiuners being respectively, Messrs VY. J. S. Hay ward and W. B. Eyre, with Messrs E. Fowler aod E. A. England ruuners-up. The first meeting of the Amberley Mutual Improvement Literary Society was held on Wednesday evening, Mr F. Courage (President) iv the choir. The President spoke on some of the advantages to be derived from these meetings, and the subject for the evening, " Prohibition," was then discussed. A lecture was delivered at the Ohoka Druids' Hall on Tuesday night, iv aid of the school prize fund, by Mr H. Bassell, on the prevention of disease and disinfection with chloride of lime and brimstone. The lecture was illustrated by several interesting chemical experiments. Mr J. V.
