JOURNALISTS' INSTITUTE.
The annual mooting of the Cuntetbtp branch of the New Zealand Jour-Ml*!*" Institute was held last evening. There wm* fairly good attendance of members, w Chairman of the branch, Mr G. 'R. H«t» presided. The following resolutions were uhrs'" mously passed;—" That this branch d*w» to protest against important meetings of Mi* Council having been hold without tho w* representatives being consulted, as provl«by the Constitution j that this branch desires to express its admiration of the si*!j» taken by Mr R. A. Loughuan.an ex-Uct*;'' bury journalist, in his ponitioa as editor o* tho Nets Zealand Times, to vindicate W principle of editorial independence» iw» this branch request the Council of tho 1»' stitute to make inquiries as to the t«ri;» and conditions on which tho New Zealand Institute might be affiliated to the hogW-J Chartered Institute of Journalists, »9« similar institutions in Australia, sofc consider tho expediency of such affili*«j lffl ' that this branch is strongly in favour of »f Libel Act so as to assimilate the Imv w"J colony to that in force in England, ft««J a copy of this resolution be the members of tho Houho for tho oft»»*r bury electorates; that this branch d»»" to protest ogainst the practice of app««V"f shorthand writers from the Civil berfjg who are not trained reporters, to Jv; Hansard staff, such practice boiizg to the professional journalists, and liwif impair the efficiency of Hansard. ~ The draft.Bill for the incorporation (A «■- Institute, which it is intended to to »? j" at the present session of Parliament, * considered and approved. , ,„ The officers for the year were ™g elected as under:—Chairman, A3r '•«•': Hart; Treasurer/Mr W, H.
