SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Selwyn County Council met) at 10.30 a.ro. yesterday. Present—•Meaers l>, MoMUlun (Chairman), W. Dunlop, T. York, J. Renaie, W. Boag, T. H. Anson, H. W. Peryman. Apologies were received for the absence of Messrs R. "Weifceitra and J. G. Murray. The Chairman stated that since the last meeting correspondence had been received from the" Akaroa County Council, asking the Council to reconsider its decision in reference to the maintenance of the two bridges and piece of road near Rabbit Island ; also, report from the Finance {Jommittee on the Eileamere drainage works j circular from the, Lands and Suryey Department, re taking land for public works; report of the Inspector of Slaughterhouses; letters concerning plantations and tenders for fencing, and reports from Messrs Daviea and Wilaon on water racea. The Chaikmax stated that the letter from the Akaroa Council had been considered by the Finance Committee, who had drafted a letter in reply. It was to the effect that under all circumstances the Council did not see its way to alter its decision. The letter was approved. The Finance Committee reported that they had carefully considered the letter from the Minister of Lands, dated May 16th, which was referred to them, and recommended the Committee to agree to accept all responsibility in connection with the drainage works connected with the Ellesmere reclamation, and undertake to keep the Lake at about its mean level, on condition that the Government grant the proposed subsidy of £750, and set aside an endowment to produce about £75 per annum, also that fresh legislation be got to enable it to extend the drainage district as desired, and to enable it to collect rates within such, district. On the motion of Mr DoHMP, the report was adopted. The Inspector of reported having inspected the houses under his charge.- -The: majority o£ the suburban houses were kept clean.. In respect of three houses in the lie bad drawn attention to the bad state of the- cattle pens. - - ■ . Mr East, Inspector of the Halswell river, reported that the work of cleaning had been satisfactorily completed. Tenders were opened and accepted as under:—Erecting fences at Horontta, C. Napier, Is"sJd per chain; New Brighton, W. Adams, 2s 7d per chain; feooing material, iron, Messrs ; P.: and l>. '. Duncan ; timber, Messrs Wood and Laurie.
The Council disposed:of some routine matters, and adjourned after passing accounts amounting to £1350 16s 7d.
