KAIAPOI INSTITUTE.

The twenty-eighth annual meeting of members of the Kaiapoi Institute Library and Reading-room was held on Monday evening, when there was a very good attendance. Mr T. Millar, President, occupied the chair. The Treasurer (Mr J. Harold Evans) presented the annual balance-sheet, showing receipts £52.105, and after paying all accounts leaving a balance of £11 7s 8d in hand. The Committee reported that there had been lately an addition made to the books of several of the latest works of travel and fiction. The balancesheet and report were adopted on the motion of Mr J. Lowthiati Wilson, who congratu. lated the officers and Committee on the satisfactory prospects and the cheerful state of the rooms, t and the good selection of newspapers of all kind. It was after some discussion decided that an inspection of the library be made, and all unserviceable books be removed. Mr Miliar was . re-elected President, Mr Evans as Treasurer, Mr E. Revell as Seoretary, Mr J. H. Sharp as Hon. Librarian. Messrs Meadowcrott, W. Eckersley, A. T. Clark, J. Jowse/, W. Broadley, A. 8. Fisher, R. Steqt, R. Blakeiay, J. H. BL Keetley were ejected members of the Managing Committee. Votes of thanks to* the officers aud Committee were unanimously agreed to, also a vote of thanks to the caretaker for the excellent order of the rooms. A lengthy discussion took place on the question of electing new trustees and incorporating the Institute under the Public Libraries Act. Ultimately it was decided that the President obtain a legal opinion on the election of trustees under an existing deed, and the powers and privileges of the members in electing trustees under the Public Libraries Act. The report on this question it was resolved should be considered at a general meeting to be held on the third Monday of July. The meeting then adjourned.
