PROPOSED ELECTRIC TRAMWAY.

[PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.]

WELLINGTON, May 21. A movement is on foot to construct a cable tram to Karori, the cars to be driven by electricity. The estimated cost of a five-miles line is £20,000. A deputation waited on the Mayor of Wellington urging the proposal. The latter, while favouring the scheme, pointed out that it was very unlikely that a loan for the purpose would be authorised under the present conditions of voting, a three-fourths majority of the ratepayers being required, and this would be rather an inopportune time to ask Parliament to pass a special Act enabling such a loan to be raised. If a Company could be fermed to undertake the construction of the line probably the Corporation, in couj auction with the Karori borough, might grant it facilities for carrying out a work of such public importance. Io is considered likeiy that steps will be taken to form a Company.
