THE GAIETY COMPANY.
Despite tbe fact that it waa the third representation of " Faust" last night the theatre was crowded to the utmost capacity, in fact Mr Hughes had sorrowfully to turn a good deal of money away. Tne piece went aa brightly as before. Mr Lonneu scored a great success throughout, aud was ably seconded by Misses Addie Conyers, Alice Lethbridge, and Leamar. Mr Court* neidge too waa excellent, aud all the principal parts were tilled most successfully. Miss Leamar's performance of 4 *Ta*ra-ra v evoked loud applause and a persistent redemand. '
To-night the first' change of programme will take place, when "Esmeralda" will be given. "Esmeralda" is, as probably will have been gathered from its' name, au adaptation in a burlesque veiu—the wilder ihe more successful—of Dumas' wonderfully thrilling story " The Hunchback of. Notre I)ame." The authors of the comic adaptation have taken a pretty wide "license, and the characters of the Monk, ;Cla__e Frollo, the Gipsy EsmeralcLi,"*Cipt*iin Phoebus the martial lover, Corporal Griugoire and the hunchback Quasimodo, are aU reproduced, but so transformed by the mimetic touch of the authors that one fails to recognise the Gombre creation of the great master of French literature. In this Mr Lonnea wiU introduce " Killaloe " with which bis name ia so widely known. In consequence of numbers being unable tosee the performance owing to the crowded state'of the theatre, and in response to a number of requests, the management will give the only matinee yet given in New Zealand on the afternoon of Wednesday next, when a holiday bill will be given. As an excursion has been arranged from Timaru, and tbe day is a holiday, no doubt there will be a large audience.
