AUCKLAND NOTES.
[press association telegram.] AUCKLAND, December 18. Saturday morning was very favourable for training purposes, and consequently there was a large number of hotaes at EUeralie.
St. Hippo galloped two miles, the first portion lv company with Fishmonger, and tbe latter with Brown Alice, but neither proved much use to Hippo, the St. Leger colt simply running away from Br owu Alioe at tua finish. Crackshot accomplished two miles at a fair pact;, but walked away lame. Merganser aud Briejaud galloped a strongly ran two miles, both moved in a taking style, the mare especially pleasing onlookera.
Impulse put fa a round efc a steady pace, and then accomplished another circuit at tliree-quartor speed, moving throughout innieeatyle. Miss Lettie and The Dancer galloped a fast three-quarter of a mile in taking style. Tbe former struck herself during the ■gaHop and walked away showing unmiaC&ke&blo symptoms of lameness. Most of the ring being absent in Waikatp very little bettlagis being transacted. Ou the Cup the best price obtainable about Merganser is 2 to 1, and though 4 to 1 is quoted about St. Hippo it is doubtful if much money could be obtained about him at that price. The withdrawal of Stepniak from the Derby favours the assumption that St. Hippo will be started for the Cup, as, with Mr Stead's colt out of the way, St. Hippo has really nothinjs of any account against Mm in the first-named race.
