THE WHITEROCK ESTATE.
The Wfaiterock Estate was submitted td auction at the Ball of the Chamber of Commerce on Saturday. Mr E. G. Stavdby acted as auctioneer, and in his opeatog remarks said that he had expected to Save seen a larger attendance, bat in the present tendency of legislation towards one man one estate, that did not make much diiferehee. He should indeed be pleased to comply strictly with the intention of the Government uad transfer this estate to onamajo. Mr Staveley then read the very vokunxnoae conditions of sale, and submitted the estate, comprising 40,298 acres, with 25,000 merino sheep, and about 6000 lambs, as a whole. Hβ quoted the wool returns for the past three years as under:—lßß9-90, 2569 bales, value £5482; 1890-91, 357 bales, £4776; 1891-92, 379 bales, £4265. Total value of wool .£14,513. There was no bid as a whole for the property. Tlio auctioneer then offered the estate inenb-drviskineaceord* ing to the pl&n in which the estate had been divided. The firat block submitted was Karetu or Young's country, comprising 8700 acres. This was offered at per acre, and started at £1 15a per acre, at which; price it was withdrawn. Mr Staveley then offered block 2, The Brotheia, 5325 acres, and block 3, Mount La wry, 5400 acres, which was withdrawn at £1 10a per acre. Lota 5, Kaka Faes, 2450 acres, and 6, Grey, 1272 acres, were then submitted, bnt do bids were forthcoming, and the Auctioneer then withdraw the balance, and tho sale ended*
