sPhe Sydney Bicycle Champion.—Mr W, Kerr, the Sydney bicyclist, arrived jestsrday by the Rotorua from Wellington, and wa3 met by a number of cyclists $t tbe Railway station. The party- then proceeded to the Pioneer Club rooms, tshere a hearty and enthusiastic welcome tras accorded to Mr Kerr. The chair was occupied by the Hon. B. C. S. Stevens, nko proposed the health of Mr ETerr, and welcomed him once more to Christchurch. Hr Etrr responded, speaking in terms of great enthusiasm as to his former visit, of ivhieli he had the most pleasant recollection?.

Scpdsn Death.—A man named William Greer, who lived by himself in a small cottage at St. Albans, died suddenly on Thursday night. He had been in bad health for the last few days. On Thursday, about 9 o'clock, Mr Kelly went in and found that Greer was very ill. Dr. Mickle, who was sent for, could not get admittance. Constable Flewellyn was sent for, end he broke a window and put a boy in, trho found that the man was dead. An iscpiest was held yesterday at the Caledonian Hotel, before Mr H. S. Wardell, Cotonsr. Constable Flewellyn and Dr. llickls gave evidence. The latter stated he had made a post-mortem examination of deceased, and was of opinion that death resulted from bronchitis and influenza, accelerated by neglect. The stomach of tbe deceased was quite empty. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the Esedical evidence.

The Voluntbers.—The E Battery of Artillery held their annual shot and shell praeUce at Tai Tapu yesterday. Mr Burke, a life member of the Battery, kindly allowed tbe corps the use of his grounds for'the occasion, and the result of the day's shooting showed that practice of this description is of inestimable benefit to the Battery. At 9 a.m. the fcur guns, under the charge of Captain Jackson, left the .rillshed, and, after a couple of hoars' £mc, reached Mr Burkes paddock. Os the arrival at their destination the corps ~as photographed, and then brought into action for shell practice, when, considering that this practice only occurs once a year, excellent shooting was done. Targets were siraek repeatedly up to ranges of 3000 yards, the shooting of No. 4 gun being, if anything, the best. After disposing of all the ammunition, the men adjourned to laach, and after which the annual sports of the Battery were held, when the following meu succeeded, in winning the digerent competitions :—Long jump, Gunner Brien: putting 191b shot, Corporal Loui&son; 100 yards, Gunner Menzies.

Sunday Schooi. Picnics.—Tie annual picaic of the Durham street Wesleyan Saaday school was held yesterday at the iwsmcts of Mr G. G. Stead, Strowan, which had been kindly lent for the occasion. There was a large muster of children, teachers and parents, and a very pleasant day was spent. A&the-cfaso of wie day cheers were given for the teachers, «c., and a special vote of thanks to Mr Stead for his kindness in placing his grounds at the disposal of the school—The St Albans Wesleyan Sunday school held jheir pic_i c i_ a paddock off St Albans hate.
