CASH AMATEUR (?) CYCLISTS.

TO THE EDH-OK OF THE PBESS. Sir, —Hitherto my sympathy has been with the Cash Amateur movement, for J recognised that the cyclists who have been endeavouring to bring about this reform were actuated by a spirit of amateurism and only wished to accept cash prizes to assist them to lecoup the cost of bicycles, &c My opinion, however, has been changed on reading an advertisement in the Pkesb, signed by two of the Australian cyclists who have been invited by the Cash Amateur Club to compete at the Club's inaugural race meeting here. These riders have shown mimistakeably that they are professionals to the core by issuing a challenge a few hours alter their arrival here to a pure amateur cyclist who is resident of another colony, and who is not likely to know anything about the challenge for some days. Apart from the unfairness of challenging a rider '" behind his back," the action is such as to disgust every person who loves British fairplay and justice. The Canterbury people have long since shown their disapproval for professional athleticism, and 1 would suggest to the management of the Cash Amateur Club the advisability of at once asking the Australians to publicly apologise tor their illadvised action.—Yours, &c, A Lover oe . Cycling.
