THE HALE-HOLIDAY MOVEMENT.
TO THB KDITOB OF THE PBESS. Sib,—l was rather surprised in taking my walk on last Thursday afternoon to see that a most distinguished and prominent member of the half-holiday movement and an affluent " Kuight of the cleaver," who was one of the first to propose the halfholiday, had his shop door open for the transaction of business and was doing a "roaring trade." The situation of the shop I refer to is not a thousand miles from Lower High street, and I was very sorry to see that almost the first man to break through the agreement was one who could well afford to abide by his word, because where one of his trade took shillings he was in the habit of taking pounds. He had agreed to close and yet his shop was partially open, and he was doing business, thug depriving others in the same trade, who had agreed to close, and yho are i Q fact only striving to live, atra could do very well without shutting, up their shops at all, as it takes them all their time to pay the rent and make both ends meet. A man in such a position, who is doing one of the best cash business trades in the city should have proved himself above such a proceeding as to open on the holiday and catch the stray customers, because, as I understand, his trade i 3 so great that he has frequently to turn customers away. How about the poor outside butchers ? What would they not give to be able to say the same thing? This question, Mr Editor, would be a good one to discuss on Labour Day (Friday). I only hope that the action of the gentleman I refer to will not be the means of breaking up a compact between the butchers of our city, which might have been the means of benefiting the employers and proved a boon to the employees. Hoping you will insert this,—Yours, &c, Butcher's Block.
